Gender Standards

February 28, 2008

I have had “double standards” on the brain the last couple of days.

From Wiki:  “A double standard refers to the treatment of one classification of people differently than other groups of people. For example, a belief that it is permissible for teenage boys, but not teenage girls, to engage in premarital sex is a double standard.”

It makes me wonder when the traditional double standards like this started blurring the lines between genders.  By traditional, I mean the double standards between men and women, the line of what is appropriate for each gender.

Are there still standards for men and women?  Are there things that men do that women can’t or shouldn’t and vice versa?

We all know the lines have been blurred, and that it’s especially prevalent for women.  Jobs, activities, and the familial role have crossed over into traditional male territory.

I have a silly, personal example to share from when I was growing up in the late 80’s/early 90’s.  I loved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  I watched the TV show everyday, I had the movies, I had the action figures, everything up to their autographs from Disney World.  I wanted to be April O’Neil.   My parents were kind of uneasy about buying me “boy toys,” but for some reason they conceded with the Turtles.  (I mean, someone had to save my Barbies from evil doers.)  But I would always ask them to buy me the cool racetracks, the robots, the models, whatever traditionally boy-related, and would always be denied.  Sure, I was a tomboy, and I still am to an extent.

What was the big deal?  Is it still a big deal?  Were my parents worried it would affect my sexuality?  Were they afraid of how the other kids would treat me? (They already thought I was weird, not ANOTHER reason, eh?)  I don’t hold anything against my parents, they were just raising me with the socially acceptable ammo they had.  It’s not their fault I was so different, right? (Although I’m sure they’d claim my creativity and inividuality in a heartbeat.)

When will we be able to just live how we want?  The lines are blurred moreso nowadays, and even challenged further, but there are still so many obvious lines that men and women are not allowed to cross into the opposite gender.

What if we just want to play with Ninja Turtles?

Hypocrisy

February 27, 2008

Hypocrisy (or being a hypocrite) is the act of pretending to oppose a belief or behaviour while holding the same beliefs or behaviours at the same time.

Funny.

How cool would it have been to have Sandiego for a last name when Carmen Sandiego was popular?  So cool.

Shoulder - I started physical therapy for my shoulder last week.  I have a tear in my rotator cuff.  Bad experience with the doc.  The PT’s are angels.  Angels who love burning my shoulder and poking the knots in my shoulder blade.  But my range is getting better and I’m getting my muscles back.

Boy - So, so happy.  He makes my day, every day.  And he likes helping me.  This weekend we planted flower and tomato seeds for our balcony.

Work - is work.  I think it’s almost time for a new job.  That may or may not come with the impending move.

Move?? - May or may not happen.  It depends on several factors.  It’s basically a wait and see game.  But you know what?  Right now, I’M STILL IN AUSTIN.  Ya freaks.

Family - My great grandmother is turning 90 so my fam is having a big party for her.  This weekend.  Oy.  That drive never gets any shorter.

Ghostland Observatory - !!!  I won tickets to go see them from the local radio station.  It’s this Friday. So. Ex. Cited.

Sewing classes - I signed up to take 4 classes.  2 beginner’s classes and 2 extra.  The 2 extra are going to be home decor.  If you’ve been following my life up til now, you know I have an interest in becoming an interior designer.  I’m considering this as a baby step towards that direction.

So see?  Shit.  I have a lot going on.  It’s really not you, it’s me.  Don’t get all upset if you don’t hear from me.  It’s nothing personal.  But you know what?  The phone works both ways.  So nyah. :-p
